My 5-year-old loves this book!
I don't know how old the reviewer from the Horn Book is, but I doubt that this book was written for him/her. My son loves this book - and the messages contained within. Hearing the song after he'd read the book only made it better for him. A good book for sensitive, nature-loving kids - like mine.

another foote classic!
One more awesome and clever piece of artwork by Norman Foote

Spiritual Advice for Buddhists and Christians
Published in Paperback by Continuum Pub Group (June, 1998)
Authors: Dalai Lama, Donald W. Mitchell, Dalai Lama Bstan-dzin-rgya-mtsho, Dalai Lama, and Bstan-'Dzin-Rgy
Average review score:

Continuing dialogue started by Thomas Merton.
Continuing a dialogue started over 30 years ago between Thomas Merton and the Dalai Lama, these talks at the Abbey of Gethsemani discuss 1) Practice of prayer and meditation 2). stages of growth, 3) the role of teacher, and 4) the goals of spiritual and social transformation.

The Dalai Lama sees the role of religion in alleviating human suffering, and the question for him is not which religion is right, but which is right for a particular person. I thought the chapter on achieving Calm Abiding was most practical, with antidotes to "the five faults", for example "The third fault is laxity and excitement. Its antidote is introspection". Discussing spiritual life, he discusses the six perfections, and sees similarity between the Christian and Buddhist monastic traditions of morality, simplicity, and contentment. Finally he discusses Nirvana, and the Christian goal of union with God. By sharing ideas between these traditions there is hope that tolerance, generosity, and love will be cultivated.

SOUND ADVICE
Dialogue is key in fostering mutual understanding with those of different religious faith groups. Such an encounter occured during the 1996 Gethsemani Encounter where Buddhist and Christian monks engaged one another on topics regarding the spiritual life.

Out of that context came this book which contains talks that His Holiness the Dalai Lama made concerning Tibetan Buddhist spirituality. The depth and breadth of his talk applied to both groups. Although his talks were of course grounded in Buddhism the advice given transcends mere sectarian concerns.

His Holiness is concerned about the daily practice of all spiritual seekers and gives pointers as to how one can be effective in one's practice through meditation, fostering a solid teacher-student relationship, the role of community in the spiritual life and the stages of spiritual growth.

I would highly recommend this gem to those who are interested in fostering an inter-religious dialogue with non-Christian groups and for those who desire to strengthen their own spiritual journey. Spirituality know no sectarian boundaries.

The Storytellers Handbook (Vampire)

Authors: Tony Harris, Andrew Greenberg, Clark Mitchell, and Robert Hatch
Average review score:

A guide for VtM Storytellers (White Wolf)
This is a collection of rules, hints, information and essays intended to help the Vampire Storyteller run a better Chronicle. I found it useful for the information on organizing a chronicle and the advice on things to do to make it more entertaining

The system is easy and realistic.
I found Vampire: The Masquerade to have one of the best rpg systems on the market. That, plus a plethora of source material, an interesting subject everyone can relate to, and plenty of willing players have made it my game of choice. I mean, who hasn't wondered what it's like to be a blood-sucking night-crawler?

Superbike (Choose Your Own Adventure ; 124)
Published in Library Binding by Gareth Stevens (July, 1901)
Authors: Edward Packard, Judith Mitchell, and Gareth Stevens Publishing
Average review score:

A pretty good book
This isn't the best Choose Your Own Adventure book, but one of the best. It follows a good plot, and it has a mild amount of action. The best part of the book is probably the Tour of America race. That part is well written and follows a good sequence of events.

So overall, this is a pretty good book, but, as I said earlier, not the best. Still, give it a try. You may like it.

Superbike
I would love to fly in the air and be the best biker with the best bike and do amazing things. Although I do have a pretty good bike.

Surviving Corporate Downsizing with Dignity and Grace!
Published in Paperback by Smart Publishing (22 October, 1999)
Authors: Mitchell C. Baldwin and Dennis G. Pappas
Average review score:

How to "stand up" after the horse you ride bucks you!
This book is a must read for any individual who is involved in corporate downsizing. This book gives you a sensitive understanding of how one can associate their identity with an employer. Mitch uses analogies that one can easily relate to in defining how your self-esteem becomes a part of the corporation you are leaving. In addition, he gives the basics of how you can put your life back together. These basics includes preparing a budget to remain financially afloat, reviewing the current situation before making plans for the future, etc. This is a good book that tells a dramatic story of his downsizing before revealing what to do to get back on track!

Finally, Some Information You Can Use!
Surviving Corporate Downsizing with Dignity and Grace opens your eyes to the entire issue of downsizing in Corporate America. If we're enjoying such a wonderful economy, why are so many people losing their jobs? The author, Mitchell Baldwin, offers advice for people who have been recently downsized, and even those who are still waiting for the ax to fall. His financial advice is practical, easy to understand, and it works. I have put into place all of his suggestions and my financial picture is greatly improved. He also offers suggestions about what to do next, how to retrain yourself, where to look for a job, and even how to go about starting your own business, as he did. Baldwin addresses the depression and anxiety one may feel when leaving a job, as well as the guilt that is often felt by the survivors. And, all of his suggestions and advice is presented from a Christian perspective, which meant a lot to me. I advise anyone who has lost a job, or thinks they may be in danger of losing a job, to get this book for their own personal library. You'll want to make notes in the margins!

Reading that makes you think and smile
This is enjoyable because it makes one think, but can be picked up and put down whenever one has time. I keep it on the table next to the couch, and guests enjoy reading it, too.

Who among us doesn't have that secret desire to meet a hero, some famous persona, or a loved one who has passed on? How many of us have done it? This book is your passport to this extradordinary experience of touching some very special people. And, like the best of gothic mysteries, it may well have a surprise ending when you recieve the real wisdom they have to offer us. As a bonus, there's a "coupon" for that very lunch you may have wanted to have and couldn't figure out how to bring it about! Enjoy! Bon Appetite!

They Like to Never Quit Praisin' God: The Role of Celebration in Preaching
Published in Paperback by United Church Pr (May, 1997)
Authors: Frank A. Thomas and Henry M. Mitchell
Average review score:

Learn What Makes Black Preaching So Compelling
What is it that makes Black Preachers so compelling? Why does it seem as though the Black Preacher is more passionate and emotional in presentation and the people?

Well this book seeks to answer these questions as well as defend the use of Passion and emotion in sermon delivery and preparation. This book presents a sermon as follows:

* Introduction of a problem
* Resolution of problem by the Gospel
* Celebration of the resolution of the problem.

At the introduction of the problem stage it is important to get the congregation on board in not only understanding mentally the problem, but experiencing the problem by being able to see the problem in their own lives. This is primarily emotional, but there is also a cognitive component

Then the black preacher skillfully shows how the gospel resolves not only the problem of the Biblical Story, but also the problem that the people are going through. This is primarily cognitive, but as always there is a emotional component.

Finally the black preacher closes with the clebration of the resolution stage. This celebration is experiential for we have experienced every other part of the sermon to this point. This is primarily emotional.

The writer privides tips and guidelines for celebration and even provides a method for sermon preparation that has celebration as the goal. This method includes a sermon worksheet that is to be filled out when putting together a sermon.

Finally, there are 3 sermons that illustrate the method which help to clarify the use of the sermon worksheet developed in the body of the book.

This is a good book that can help most preachers to provide an emotional component to their sermons.

The only thing I would probably like is a few more sermons that illustrate the method provided in the book.

A Mountaintop Experience
Frank Thomas has developed a methodology for the kind of preaching that moves the congregation from the pew to the "mountaintop." Although this book is spiritually based, it contains steps to follow throughout the entire preaching process. One of the things I really liked about the book is that it the powerful treatment of the subject of "celebration." Whereas, most authors of preaching books briefly mention the topic, Thomas provides a thorough analysis of the phenomenon as experienced in African American Christian worship. He takes the time to explain what celebration is, its purpose and function in preaching, and a process that evokes the spirit of celebration. This book moves the reader into a state of awe by discussing the core belief of the "assurance of grace" as it relates to celebration and preaching. Thomas discusses theses topics from the emotive and theological perspective of black preaching and the impact it has on the hearers of the sermon. When the reader is able to fully grasp what Thomas is saying, he or she is better equipped to design and deliver sermons, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, that touch the very souls of the congregation, and motivate or challenge the preacher to be the cheerleader in the worship service that, "never quits praisin' God. This book is suitable for any preacher who loves to preach. The material in this book is suitable for both professional clergy and lay ministers alike.

Two Can Share, Too (Bear in the Big Blue House)
Published in Paperback by Simon Spotlight (May, 1999)
Authors: Janelle Cherrington, Normand Chartier, Andy Yerkes, and Mitchell Kriegman

Teaching to Share
My 4 year old is just adjusting to not being the only kid in the house. This book is helping him prepare for when he has to share more than just attention with his baby brother. He loves Bear in the Big Blue House too so it is a bonus!

Share Bear with those you love!
We all know how important learning to share is but can Bear find a way to make Ojo share her special Snow Bear with Treelo? Of course he can!

Ojo loves Snow Bear and she shows that typical child behavior of wanting her toy to be all hers but Treelo just wants to have fun and doesn't understand. Bear steps in and shows Ojo the world of imagination can open doors that let your friends, like Treelo, play with Snow Bear with you. When two people share everything becomes twice the fun.

The Waite Group's Unix System V Primer
Published in Paperback by SAMS (July, 1992)
Authors: Mitchell Waite, Stephen Prata, and Donald Martin
Average review score:

Great College Text
I use this book in my classroom for the intermediate-level CS college student. It covers detail in a conversational way, giving the Unix novice a chance at absorbing such a complex operating system. While it has it's weaknesses (not much on shell scripting), it is certainly the "bible" of Unix books.

A very useful, well written book
Although I have been using UNIX for years, and have half a shelf of O'Reilly UNIX books on various subjects, I still keep coming back to the Waite Group's UNIX V Primer. The reason being that although it is not a deep treatment of any UNIX subject, it gives you the information you need to know to actually *do* something. Typically I will use it to remind me how to do something in Sed for example. Something that I don't use that often, and just need to see how to do one simple thing. Instead of hunting around in a more complete technical book, I can go to the primer and get quick no-brainer instructions on how to do it. The examples are clear and well illustrated and the writing is excellent. Highly recommended for novices and anyone who bumps into UNIX a fair bit but isn't an avatar.

Wilde: Screenplay
Published in Hardcover by Newstar Pr (October, 1997)
Authors: Julian Mitchell, Stephen Fry, and Juliann Mitchell
Average review score:

High quality, beautifully arranged coffee-table book, but...
Yes, it is a book of highest print quality (printed in Italy), with some wonderful photos, and very true to the movie's original dialogue(I should know, I have seen it four times...). But, it is just that....Neither it is very insighful nor is it the best example of Mr.Fry literary wit. Overall, it is a fine gift for someone, who loves Jude Law or the movie itself VERY VERY MUCH... As for the man in question himself, i.e. Oscar Wilde, this book is nothing special, because so was the movie.

The high aesthetic line
If you loved the glorious film that is Wilde, this is the perfect companion, reproducing the entire script, showing behind-the-scenes photos, and featuring an interesting introduction by the great actor Stephen Fry. Large photos from the movie are reproduced in full color, showing the intricately detailed attention to historical authenticity. Even if you didn't like the movie, buy it for the photos of Jude Law as "Bosie." He is absolutely beautiful!
